Moisture-curing polyurethane (1K MCU) is a single-component polyisocyanate-prepolymer coating that cures by reacting with airborne water vapour — no hardener mixing and no pot life. What is a moisture-curing polyurethane coating?

A moisture-curing polyurethane coating is a one-component (1K) system built around an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer that hardens when its free –NCO groups react with moisture in the surrounding air. Because the curing agent is the moisture already present in the environment, the formulator does not weigh in a second hardener, does not face a pot life, and does not discard half-mixed batches.

The prepolymer itself is made by reacting excess polyisocyanate with hydroxyl-bearing polymers (polyester, polyether, acrylic, or castor-oil polyols). A finished 1K MCU paint also contains low-water-content solvents, dehydrating agents, pigments, additives, and a catalyst. Typical prepolymers carry an NCO content of roughly 4–15% and are formulated at an NCO/OH molar ratio of about 3 or higher so that enough free isocyanate survives to cure on contact with air.

Why does moisture-curing polyurethane work?

Curing is driven by a two-step reaction with water. First, a free –NCO group reacts with atmospheric H₂O to form an unstable carbamic acid that releases carbon dioxide and leaves behind a primary amine. That amine then reacts with a neighbouring –NCO group to build a urea linkage, knitting the prepolymer chains into a tough crosslinked film. The released CO₂ is why high-build coats applied in very humid air can foam or pinhole — and why low-water solvents and dehydrating agents are designed into the formulation.

The practical advantage of this mechanism is its enormous working window: the film keeps building as long as there is moisture in the air. Types of moisture-curing prepolymer: mechanism, performance, direction

Dongsen produces three isocyanate backbones for 1K MCU coatings — TDI-based, MDI-based, and aliphatic HDI-based — plus a water-dispersible aliphatic version for low-VOC systems. Each backbone sets a different performance ceiling.

A note on yellowing: non-yellowing performance comes from the aliphatic HDI chemistry, not from the carrier — an aromatic backbone (TDI or MDI) will amber under UV whether the carrier is solvent or water. In Dongsen's 1K MCU line, the aliphatic HDI grades DXCH-80 (solvent-borne) and WDC-80H (waterborne) are the colour-stable options; the TDI and MDI grades are best kept indoors or under pigmented topcoats. DXCH-80 is the standout for daylight-exposed clear finishes: it starts near water-white (Fe–Co colour ≤1) so it will not pre-tint a clear coat, and runs a free HDI monomer of just ≤0.1%.

How to choose a grade by application

Match the prepolymer to the job, then tune for your climate:

The first is slow cure in dry winter air — because moisture is the curing agent, low humidity simply slows the reaction; we typically recommend a faster grade (DXC-60S) or a catalyst bump rather than over-applying. The second is CO₂ bubbling in high-build or high-humidity coats; we have seen this resolved by limiting film thickness per pass and keeping low-water solvents and dehydrating agents in the formulation, so the released gas escapes before the surface skins over. These are not product faults — they are the chemistry of moisture cure, and they are managed at the formulation and application stage.
