A polyurethane floor coating is a 1K or 2K PU system built from a polyol resin and a polyisocyanate hardener (plus fillers, anti-aging and additives) that cures into an abrasion-, chemical- and impact-resistant floor. The polyisocyanate hardener you select is what sets durability, gloss and yellowing resistance: an aliphatic (HDI) hardener such as HDX-100 keeps outdoor floors from yellowing, while MDI sealer-primers anchor the build coat. What is a polyurethane floor coating?

A polyurethane (PU) floor coating is synthesized from polyether or polyester polyols, polyisocyanates, chain extenders, curing agents, fillers and anti-aging agents. The cured film offers strong mechanical properties plus weather and UV resistance, so PU floors are used where they must take heavy foot traffic and machinery movement — industrial and mining workshops, parking decks, and sports facilities.

Compared with epoxy floor coatings, PU flooring brings higher abrasion resistance and far better outdoor behaviour: epoxy tends to crack and yellow under sunlight, while a properly formulated PU floor stays crack- and UV-resistant indoors and outdoors, holding gloss under scratching and impact. A clear PU topcoat is also commonly applied over an epoxy primer as an abrasion- and scratch-resistant protective layer.

Why does the isocyanate hardener decide floor performance?

It is easy to credit "polyurethane" for a floor's durability and UV resistance, but the property buyers actually argue about — outdoor yellowing — is set by the backbone of the hardener, not by the word "polyurethane." Aliphatic (HDI / IPDI) hardeners build non-yellowing, weather-stable networks; aromatic (TDI) hardeners yellow under sunlight and belong in buried or indoor layers. An aromatic PU floor will yellow outdoors just as readily — so for an exposed deck, parking structure or sports surface, the lightfastness comes specifically from the aliphatic HDI hardener.

The hardener also sets crosslink density. A high-solid HDI trimer such as HDX-100 (100% solids, 22% NCO) packs a dense urethane network — the source of the abrasion and chemical resistance a workshop floor needs — while running low-VOC because there is little solvent to release.

In our experience reviewing floor formulations, when an outdoor PU floor yellows the root cause is almost always an aromatic hardener in the topcoat, not the resin — and the fix is to move the topcoat to an aliphatic HDI grade while keeping the cheaper aromatic chemistry in the buried primer.

Reading the table: use the aromatic MDI sealers (DXCE-551 at 31% NCO penetrates and anchors; DXCM-121 solvent-free) where the layer is buried and yellowing does not matter. Reserve the aliphatic HDI grades for the topcoat that sees daylight: HDX-100 for a hard, high-build outdoor floor, or DXCH-80 for a 1K moisture-cure non-yellowing finish. DXCJ-40MPA gives a self-leveling high-gloss topcoat but is TDI-based, so keep it indoors; WD-8980 carries the same HDI chemistry into low-VOC waterborne floors.

Where are polyurethane floor coatings used?

The hardener choice follows the venue — how much abrasion, whether the floor sees sun, and how much slip resistance it needs:

  • Industrial & mining workshops — need maximum wear resistance and toughness under machinery and falling-object impact. High-solid HDI trimer topcoats (HDX-100) give the crosslink density required.
  • Commercial floors (hospitals, libraries, subway cars) — high-gloss, matte or semi-matte decorative finishes that skip waxing; self-leveling grades suit indoor settings.
  • Slip-resistant areas (parking lots, sidewalks, overpasses) — anti-slip agents added into the topcoat for safe wet-condition traction.
  • Sports facilities (tracks, courts) — elastomeric, flexible, recovery-and-scratch-resistant surfaces; outdoor exposure makes the aliphatic backbone essential to avoid yellowing.
  • Hardwood floor coating — abrasion- and moisture-protective clear PU that keeps wood from swelling and warping while adding gloss.

How is a PU floor system built — and where does the hardener sit?

A durable PU floor is applied in layers, and the hardener changes by layer:

  • 1. Surface preparation — clean and grind the substrate; patch cracks. No hardener yet, but the prep determines how well the sealer anchors.
  • 2. Sealer / primer — a penetrating PU sealer soaks into the prepared floor. A low-viscosity MDI sealer such as DXCE-551 (<100 cps, 31% NCO) penetrates deeply and anchors the build; DXCM-121 offers a solvent-free option.
  • 3. Build / mid coat — mid-coat material with quartz sand forms a dense, level base.
  • 4. Topcoat — the layer that sees wear and daylight. This is where the aliphatic HDI hardener earns its place: HDX-100 for a hard 2K outdoor floor, DXCH-80 for a 1K non-yellowing finish, or DXCJ-40MPA for an indoor self-leveling high-gloss surface.

Why does a polyurethane floor resist abrasion better than epoxy?

A PU floor's abrasion and outdoor performance come from a tough, flexible urethane network. Epoxy floors are hard but brittle and yellow outdoors; a high-crosslink-density HDI topcoat such as HDX-100 (22% NCO, 100% solids) holds up to traffic and UV where epoxy cracks.

Which hardener keeps an outdoor floor from yellowing?

An aliphatic hardener keeps the floor from yellowing. Lightfastness comes from the aliphatic (HDI / IPDI) backbone — for example HDX-100 or moisture-cure DXCH-80 — not from the word "polyurethane." Aromatic (TDI / MDI) grades yellow and belong in buried or indoor layers.

What hardener should I use for the sealer-primer layer?
